2011 Tipping Competition

2011 HWPA Tipping Competition supported by

By Michael Wilson of www.bodugi.com

Bodugi, the first social betting website joined forces with the HWPA to support the 2011 running of the ever popular tipping competition. Bodugi is all about engagement, interactivity and longevity, and this year’s competition couldn’t have highlighted this any better. Players made their selections for sixteen rounds from the Cheltenham Festival in March to the Hennessy meeting in November, with the best twelve scores counting towards their overall totals. Points were awarded for where their selections finished, 1st = 10 x SP, 2nd = 2 x SP, 3rd = 1 x SP, race four on each day was worth double points, and in the end, it went right down to the wire!

Through the first seven rounds it was fairly tight at the top of the leaderboard, however, by the time Royal Ascot came along tactics were emerging and deployed with great effect by Martin Dixon. A spectacular score of 580 points at the Royal Meeting saw him shoot clear of the opposition, having already won the Epsom round a fortnight earlier, and confident utterances of “That should be enough” were heard emanating from the press room.

At the half way point, Dixon was comfortable but with a score of just 28 points at Ascot’s King George meeting, were the wheels beginning to fall off? Taking full advantage of this slack performance was none other than Steven Cargill who registered a tasty score of 282 points. The confidence and strategy had arrived just in time for Cargill who racked up the points finding the likes of Margot Did at York and Parish Hall at Newmarket so that he led by 35 going in to the final round, the 3 day Hennessy meeting.

Dixon and Cargill fought it out and both registered their best scores on Day one of Newbury’s highlight. Lidar at 6/1 collected 60 points for both players, and Dixon picked up another 43 points courtesy of Ballyquin Queen, Viking Blonde and Empire Levant, finishing with 103 and a final total for the year of 2358 points. A gallant effort indeed, however Cargill added to Lidar with the placed efforts of Miss Millborne and Tony Star collecting a total of 80 for the final round and a grand total of 2369. Eight months, sixteen rounds and the President lands the spoils by just 11 points. An 11/10 winner really can make all the difference!

Many thanks to all of those who played Bodugi during the competition, we hope you enjoyed it and we look forward to seeing you back on the tables!

The HWPA is hugely appreciative of the thousands of pounds in prizes given away during the season by www.bodugi.com in support of our tipping competition this year, and we wish them every success with their venture in the future.

========================================================================

The final round of the nine month HWPA Tipping Competition kindly supported by www.bodugi.com was the Hennessy Meeting at Newbury and it went the way of occasional player Nigel Burns who selected five scoring horses on the final day to take the £500 first prize ahead of Chris Oliver, while the main competition protaganists fiddled around with seconds and thirds…

1st – Nigel Burns – 235.33 points – £500
2nd – Chris Oliver – 225.50 points – £100
3rd – Wayne Finter – 208.83 points – £50

The individual day winners were;

Day 1 – “Dave The Dog” – 154.60 points – £50
Day 2 – Arthur Jones – 149 points – £50
Day 3 – “elenbrewer” – 235.33 points – £50

The scores from all sixteen rounds are being checked before the final result can be announced.

===========================================================================

A score of 240 points at Cheltenham’s November meeting was enough for Richard Duncan to walk away with his second £500 first prize in winning the penultimate round of the HWPA Tipping Competition supported generously by www.bodugi.com

1st – Richard Duncan, 240 points – £500
2nd – Chris Oliver, 197 points – £100
3rd – Nigel Burns, 170.53 points – £50

The individual day winners were;

Day 1 – Irene Stephens, 167 points – £50
Day 2 – Richard Duncan, 240 points – £50
Day 3 – Chris Oliver, 197 points – £50

Waiting for the full list of Cheltenham scores to come through from Bodugi after which the overall standings will be published here, hopefully later today.

or not, as it turned out.

=======================================================================================

Newmarkets Autumn meetings combined for round 14 of the www.bodugi.com supported HWPA Tipping competition. 500 pointer Never Can Tell winning The Cesarewitch influenced the result as follows;

1st – Richard Duncan, 592 points – £500
2nd – Kieron Muir, 526.88 points – £100
3rd – Arthur Jones, 272.5 points – £50

Individual day winners;

Day 1 – Arthur Jones, 272.5 points – £25
Day 2 – Hugh Joseph, 138 points – £25
Day 3 – David Smalley, 126 points – £25
Day 4 – Richard Duncan, 592 points – £25

Fortunately for those at the top of the leaderboard the Cesarewitch result had little effect and the overall standings are as follows;

1st – Steven Cargill – 2349 points
2nd – Martin Dixon – 2297 points
3rd – Dave Newton – 2163.25 points
4th – David Smalley – 1959.25 points
5th – Kel Mansfield – 1818.4 points
6th – Dave Nevison – 1809.42 points
7th – Wayne Finter – 1763 points
8th – Dave Ord – 1741.5 points
9th – Paul Ostermeyer – 1718.76 points
10th – Darrell Williams – 1607.02 points
11th – Will Hayler – 1546.2 points
12th – Keiron Muir – 1450.3 points
13th – Dominique Hamblin – 1439 points
14th – Arthur Jones – 1426.25 points
15th – Matt Brocklebank – 1418.65 points

Dixon, who had been in front since Royal Ascot four months ago, has finally been reeled in by Cargill who has not won a single round in the competition.

Two rounds of stick jumpers remain, beginning with Cheltenham on the 11th – 13th November, and ending with Newbury a fortnight later.

===============================================================================

The St Leger meeting at Doncaster was round 13 of the HWPA tipping competition sponsored by www.bodugi.com. The first four home were;

1st – Kel Mansfield, 360.33 points – £500
2nd – Keiron Muir, 320 points – £100
3rd – Paul Latimer, 241.75 points – £50
4th – Steven Cargill, 235 points

Individual day winners (that did not provide overall prize winners) were;

Day 1 – Jordan Burnitt, 175 points, – £25
Day 2 – Paul Latimer, 241.75 points, – £25
Day 4 – Steven Cargill, 235 points, – £25

A tremendous effort from Mansfield to win a second major meeting in just a few weeks, and he moves into 8th from 11th on the overall standings. With tipsters now counting just their best twelve scores to the end of the season here is the top of the table,

1st – Martin Dixon – 2272.4 points
2nd – Steven Cargill – 2166.5 points
3rd – Dave Newton – 2116.5 points
4th – David Smalley – 1834.25 points
5th – Dave Nevison – 1753.67 points
6th – Dave Ord – 1725.5 points
7th – Paul Ostermeyer – 1718.76 points
8th – Kel Mansfield – 1669.15 points
9th – Darrell Williams – 1599.52 points
10th – Wayne Finter – 1590.5 points
11th – Will Hayler – 1509.2 points
12th – Matt Brocklebank – 1360.4 points
13th – Dominique Hamblin – 1354.25 points
14th – Chris Oliver – 1309.51 points
15th – John Lees – 1281.16 points

Dixon must be on painkillers for his neck with all the looking over his shoulder he is having to do now.

There are five days in which to muster a decent score in round 14 which is comprised of two meetings at Newmarket, 22nd to 24th September, and 8th October. With last chance merchants aiming at 100/1 shots, it could all turn ugly yet! Three competitions remain.

=============================================================================

Here is the result from York, round 12 of the HWPA tipping competition generously supported by www.bodugi.com

1st – Arthur Jones, 433 points – £500
2nd – Will Hayler, 419 points – £100
3rd – Steven Cargill, 412 points – £50
4th – Julian Armfield, 402 points – £25

The individual days winners were;

Day 1: Dave Ord – 365 points – £50
Day 2: Chris Oliver – 271 points – £50
Day 3: Arthur Jones – 433 points – £50
Day 4: Julian Armfield – 206 points – £50

Last years champion tipster Jones has made little impact this year and still languishes in 30th position after York.

With Dixon clinging to his lead and with twelve competitions completed there could be some interesting times ahead over the final four as tipsters can begin to drop their worst scores and take only their best twelve rounds to make their final totals.

1st – Martin Dixon – 2063.90 points
2nd – Dave Newton – 2044.90 points
3rd – Steven Cargill – 1948.50 points

13th – Matt Brocklebank – 1289.15 points
14th – John Lees – 1198.41 points
15th – Chris Oliver – 1193.76 points

4th – Steven Cargill – 1536.5 points
5th – Darrell Williams – 1464.4 points

9th – Matt Brocklebank – 1289.15 points
10th – Dominique Hamblin – 1209.52 points
11th – Dave Ord – 1192.5 points

13th – Sam Cone – 1187.25 points
14th – Adrian Hunt – 1112.42 points
15th – Will Hayler – 1075.2 points

Dixon’s lead is shrinking all the time. York could prove important as the 12th meeting. Competitors can begin to drop their worst scoring meetings from their totals once we head to Doncaster with your best 12 meetings providing your final total.
