Some of the finest (and not so fine) golfers among the ranks of the HWPA lined up to do battle on the Downs
course at Goodwood before the Glorious meeting and with valuable Ryder Cup points up for grabs, it was
always going to be a hard-fought contest.
Generously sponsored once again by Blue Square, who have already expressed a desire to make the event even
bigger and better in 2011, the tournament returned to its spiritual home of the Kennels and this 7104-yard
course, with its running fairways, undulating greens and dramatic changes of level in the Downland hills and
valleys, ensured a healthy turnout (as did the bacon butties).
With the weather set fair until the evening, it was left to Mick Fitzgerald to lead the field home and take the individual prize whilst the team led by Jonathan Powell and Charlie Fawcus took the team prize.
The longest drive competition was won by Bill Selwyn whilst the nearest the pin was landed by George Primarolo, who hit the luckiest shot since Terry Wogan’s putt at Gleneagles in 1981. Apologies go to Ryan Spencer who was the moral victor. There were also Blue Square goody bags for any player who managed to hit the green from the tee on the par three first.
Huge thanks must go to Dan Abraham who not only organised the Goodwood leg but also the SIS-sponsored
York event which took place at Sandburn Hall Golf Club near Flaxton. The day was a rousing success despite a few players having to pull out at a late stage but those that did make it to the first tee were treated to some fine golfing conditions.
It was clear to see why Dan had organised the event as he romped home to take first place from Steve Carroll
in second and Hugh Routledge in third. Steve was to gain some sort of compensation by taking the longest drive whilst the nearest the pin competition was won by Alan Amies. Thanks to SIS for kindly putting up prizes and some money behind the bar.
With several masters in the art of bluffing present, at the second annual HWPA Poker Challenge in York, it was always going to be tough to win but Julian Armfield proved to be card sharp in a final head-to-head with Dan Abraham.
Julian and Dan had seen off Steve Carroll and Jan Green (who belied her novice status) in the earlier skirmishes and with Bruce Jackson stepping in as dealer for the final showdown, emotions ran high (as did the bar bill). Big thanks go to Brigantes for hosting the evening, to our President for organising the event and to totesport for providing prizes.
