HWPA NEWSLETTER new President’s first

From Marcus Townend, May 5, 2017
A few weeks have passed since I accepted the Presidency of the HWPA at the annual AGM at Aintree and, while this is hardly grand enough to be called a newsletter, I thought it appropriate that an initial letter be sent out to members.

But it would be wrong to start looking to the future without first putting on record the Association’s thanks to Steven Cargill for all his hard work during five years at the helm.

Much of what Steven did went on behind the scenes and will have fallen into the thankless task basket. But I know how hard he worked and the time he devoted to his role.

I hope that Steven will now be able to look forward to the benefits of being a member of the HWPA.

The media landscape has changed dramatically in recent years. The decline of newspapers has been countered by the rise of websites and social media.

The challenge for the HWPA is to remain a relevant organisation to its members and make sure it is a trade body that writers and photographers still feel is worthwhile joining.

Ultimately, we represent you, be that in general discussions with racecourses or trade bodies or with individual issues.

Any issues with Press Rooms that you feel need addressing should be reported to anyone on the committee. Our names are all on the HWPA website.

The HWPA has its first committee meeting of the year at York’s Dante meeting. I hope to let you know more about our plans and the issues we potentially face in the light of that meeting.

Annual Tipping Competition
I am delighted to announce that RaceBets have agreed to back the annual Tipping Competition again this year. Their backing is generous and gratefully received.

HWPA member Will Lefevre has also kindly agreed to help co-ordinate this year’s competition.

Details will be announced shortly but, as in 2016, the aim is to launch the competition at Epsom’s Derby Meeting next month.

It seems logical to try to keep the competition within a calendar year. So I propose that the 2017 competition will be concluded just before this year’s annual lunch in December.

This will allow us to start the 2018 competition earlier in the New Year.

It will be also mean slightly less rounds to this year’s competition but, providing we get plenty of entries, allow us to pay out bigger prizes.

Full details will hopefully be confirmed shortly.

New Haydock Press Room
Following the annual space issues with the Press Room at Haydock for November’s Betfair Chase meeting, the team there have delivered on their promise to extend and modernise the facility.

They have also decided to name the new Press Room in honour of our former Vice President Ray Gilpin and it will open on Saturday 27 May at noon.

Annual Golf Tournament
Dan Abraham is once again organising the HWPA’s annual golf tournament at Goodwood. Monday 31 July is the date for your diary if you fancy playing. Details to follow.
